Because of Gulf Shores' location near Mobile Bay, visitors can explore several historic forts along the water. Most were built during the 1700s and 1800s, and they've played a part in several major wars throughout U.S. history.
Dauphin Island, just outside Mobile Bay, is a short drive from Gulf Shores — with water views and a ferry ride included — and serves as the gateway to some of the region's most storied fortifications.
Step Back in Time
Called the “finest example of military architecture in the New World.” Originally built as Fort Bowyer during the War of 1812, it guards the eastern mouth of Mobile Bay, across the channel from Dauphin Island.
Built in 1821 and central to the famous Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War. Dauphin Island has seen many battles and later served as a U.S. military training site during both World Wars.
Originally constructed by the French in the 1720s, this fort protected the citizens of Mobile for more than 100 years. While you're there, explore the picturesque Fort Condé Village neighborhood, built nearby in the 1820s.
About an hour and a half into Alabama's interior near Tensaw, this fort played a pivotal role in the Creek War and is the site of the historic Fort Mims Massacre.
