Est. 1968 — Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, Alabama
From $500 and a dream to Alabama's Gulf Coast vacation rental authority — a family story of grit, loyalty, and a bird that never quits.
Two families. One coastline. A company built not on capital, but on character — and a refusal to quit through four recessions, natural disasters, and a real estate market that tested everyone around them.
Before Brett/Robinson existed, Tillis and Gene Brett started with just $500 to form Brett Real Estate. It was an act of courage as much as commerce — two brothers betting on themselves on the Gulf Coast of Alabama.
Their journey began in Chickasaw, Alabama, going door to door, building trust one handshake at a time. That relentless work ethic led them to a partnership with Tommy Robinson, a subdivision developer and hardware store owner who brought a builder's instinct to match their sales drive.
Four recessions. Natural disasters. A real estate market that crushed competitors. The Brett and Robinson families faced every storm — economic and literal — and came through stronger each time.
Where others folded, they held the line. Their American spirit and a team that believed in them made the difference. This wasn't just survival — it was the forging of a culture that would define everything that came after.
"The people made the company and it starts right here. We're dedicated."— Tillis Brett, 2016
"Our great associates and employees over the years have been a great team. That's what makes it — our commitment, dedication, hard work and, of course, the fact that we never thought about quitting or giving up."— Gene Brett
In 1985, from the ashes of a burned-down beach house in Orange Beach, rose the very first Phoenix condominium. It wasn't just a building — it was a symbol. A declaration that this company builds on the ruins of setbacks, not in spite of them.
During the savings and loan crisis, while the industry was in freefall, Brett/Robinson doubled down on trust. They honored every commitment to condo owners when it would have been easy — and perhaps profitable — not to.
"We thought that was a crazy name… but it just caught on. And Gene pushed pretty hard, he would not back off of it."— Tommy Robinson, on the name "Phoenix"
The name Phoenix was Gene Brett's idea — inspired by the mythical bird that rises from flame, stronger than before. It became the most recognized name on Alabama's Gulf Coast.
Today, Brett/Robinson manages over a thousand properties — primarily Gulf-front and waterfront condos — across dozens of condo projects and private beach houses in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The next generation carries the torch — leading with the same values of hard work, integrity, and family that Tillis, Gene, and Tommy built into the foundation.
The Gulf Coast has changed dramatically since two brothers went door to door with $500. But the company's soul hasn't. Every guest, every owner, every team member is part of a story that started with a handshake and a belief that doing the right thing is always worth it.
