for World Sea Turtle Day!

DID YOU KNOW….

Three of the world’s 7 species of sea turtles seek nesting season right here on our home turf of Alabama Beaches! A mother turtle will lay around 110 eggs per nest, and may repeat this process up to 9 times in one season – that’s a lot of work! Sea turtles are vital to the health of our waters, and with such low survival rates, every hatchling counts! These amazing creatures are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act, and YOU can make a difference!

Here are ways you can help during the peak nesting season from May through October! Please:

- Avoid flash photography and white flashlights at night. Red lights are acceptable, and red sticker lenses for your phone or flashlight can be picked up for free at the Orange Beach Welcome Center.

- Keep a good distance and minimal noise to avoid disrupting the crawl journey.

- Remove ALL beach gear, tents, trash, and chairs, as obstruction may result in turtles retreating without laying their eggs.

- Flatten sand castles and fill any holes to prevent entrapment or injury--for turtles and humans alike!

- Enjoy yourself, show respect, and LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS!
