Quiet beaches, coastal habitats, birding, and family-friendly trails
For nature lovers who’ve hit the beach, it’s hard to beat Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge for beautiful views, peaceful hiking trails, wildlife, and a window into the Gulf Coast ecosystem. Just a short drive from our Gulf Shores condos and Orange Beach rentals, Bon Secour lets you leave the bustle behind and immerse yourself in thousands of acres of protected coastal wilds.
“Bon Secour” means “safe harbor” in French—and since 1980, the refuge has protected key habitats across Fort Morgan, Little Dauphin Island, Little Point Clear, Perdue, and Sand Bayou. With tens of thousands of visitors annually, you’ll still find plenty of space to enjoy quiet marshes and dunes.
Bon Secour serves as a feeding and resting area for migratory birds—about 400 species have been identified as seasonal or permanent residents. Expect spring warblers (March–May) and summer sightings of egrets, herons, osprey, rails, owls, nighthawks, kingfishers, and woodpeckers.
Look for sea turtles (green, loggerhead, Kemp’s Ridley) in nearby waters and keep an eye out for the unique, endangered Alabama Beach Mouse. Other possible sightings include red fox, armadillos, coyotes, wild pigs, and—of course—alligators.
Pro tips: Visit early for dolphins and birdlife, or near dusk for deer and owls. Bring bug spray in peak season, stay on marked trails, and respect wildlife viewing distances.
If you love nature—or just want to relax on pristine, quiet beaches—add Bon Secour to your itinerary. It’s an easy day trip from our comfortable Orange Beach condos and Gulf Shores rentals.
