For the History Buffs

Early settlers, Indians, mansions and magnolias, civil war battles and battleships...

History is alive and well in Baldwin and Mobile counties. Whatever your passion, you will find something of interest to stimulate your imagination.

In the past the Alabama coast has played host to tradesmen, fisherman, Native Americans, pirates and soldiers from Spain, France and England. The area is steeped in history and culture.

Local museums in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores take you back to the early days with the use of displays of artifacts from Native American tribes and Spanish explorers. Witness the early beginnings of Gulf Coast living and let your imagination take you from our humble beginnings to what it is today.

Another step back in time will take you to the civil war. Ft Morgan site of the Battle of Mobile Bay, (Damm the torpedoes full steam ahead!) sits directly across from Ft Gaines on Dauphin Island. During the summer season explore Ft Morgan by candle light each Tuesday night. Young historians may follow their passion and participate in a civil war day camp at Ft. Morgan.

A fun form of transportation between Ft Morgan and Dauphin Island is the Ft Morgan Ferry also referred to as the Mobile Bay Ferry. The ferry will take you, your family and your car across the bay in about 45 minutes. Or, you may leave your car at the boarding dock and pick it up later. (Schedule listed below).

It is easy to spend a full day at Dauphin Island. The island offers several points of interest. Explore Ft Gaines, the Estuariam or the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. All of these attractions will hold your interest for hours.
