Local dynamic duo Tim Langston and his son Alex made the United States Martial Arts Team and are set to compete for Team USA in the 2016 World Martial Arts Games in Johannesburg, South Africa sanctioned by the Olympics. Alex (11) made the team in April and Tim (44) in June. They are the only Father-son pair on the USA team and two of only three competitors from Alabama.

They train locally in Gulf Shores at Wheeles Karate Academy with Sensei Chris Wheeles, Sensei Kristie Wheeles and Sensei Kyle Robbins. They also train with Gulf Coast Martial Arts and in Ashland. Alex will compete in four divisions and Tim in six.

They leave for the WMA Games Oct. 10 and return Oct. 19 and are hoping to raise money to help with their travel expense goal of $6,000.

A raffle is being held to help the Langstons reach that goal. The drawing will be held Oct. 8 at The Cove Bar & Grill, 131 Cove Ave. in Gulf Shores, 6-11 p.m. A competition level pit-barbeque smoker is the grand prize with more “undercard” prize drawings. For ticket or more information call (251) 233-2446.

“We’re all excited to have this opportunity,” Tim Langston said. “We are happy to be representing both our state and our local area. And the whole Gulf Coast, really. We’re working hard training now to get ready and just look forward to the whole experience. But also to win a medal or as many of them as we can and bring them home.”
