Rainy Day Activities Are Good for Hot Days Too

Kids are funny. You might think you have them all figured out, then they go and switch things up on you. I got to witness this during a Gulf Shores & Orange Beach vacation with my sister and her family. The two kiddos were completely happy playing on the beach and swimming in the pool and sliding down water slide into the lazy river at Phoenix West—for the first part of the week. Then they decided they were tired of the sun and heat and wanted to do something different.

So what do you do when you’re spending a week at the beach with the kiddos and outdoor activities suddenly become too much? You might treat it the same as a rainy day and indulge them in a little rainy day fun.

And there’s plenty of that to be found in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach. We ended up taking the kids to places like the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center and IMAX Dome Theater in Mobile and Adventure Island in Orange Beach (arcade games and laser tag are really fun ways to escape the heat for a while). Museums are another good way to get out of the sun and learn about the area’s history and culture—the National Museum of Naval Aviation and the Gulf Shores Museum are a couple of my favorites.

Very often you can find an entertaining event—like the South Baldwin Community Theatre’s production of “101 Dalmations,” which begins this Thursday, August 2nd. My sister’s kids would’ve loved this…maybe they should consider another trip to the Gulf this month (and consider bringing along a favorite relative again!).
