With the start of football season and the race to postseason baseball in full swing, fall always puts me in the mood for sports. And after checking the events calendar for this weekend, I’m wishing I were going to be in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach—the first weekend of fall is going to be a good one for sports down there.
The sporting fun actually begins today, September 22nd, with the Alabama State Tri-Level Tennis Championships—a competition of more than 300 tennis players at Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club and The Beach Club. Having recently followed a very competitive US Open, I would love to get down there and see this championship. The event runs through Sunday, September 25th.
Friday, September 23rd marks the beginning of the 2011 Gold Diamond National Exposure Tournament, with more than 30 softball teams competing at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex—in the presence of college coaches, no less.
Then this Saturday and Sunday, September 24th and 25th, the streets of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach will be swarming with bikers during the Bike MS: Tour de Beach. This is a fundraising event to benefit the Alabama-Mississippi Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
And of course there’s the usual Saturday and Sunday (and Monday) football viewing at The Hangout—always a good time, and an excellent way to get into that fall spirit.
