Day trip tour of the delta
Want a relaxing, fun day trip from the beach to see local wildlife in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta? You may not know it yet, but your answer is “yes!”
WildNative Delta Safaris operates out of the Five Rivers Delta Resource Center in Spanish Fort. They provide eco-boat tours of this amazing environmental marvel that has been called “America’s Amazon.”
A delta boat tour takes passengers to the swamps of the lower Mobile-Tensaw Delta. My son recently suggested the trip and I am so glad I agreed to it. We spotted alligators, a bald eagle, osprey, herons and lots of pelicans!
I learned a lot about the rich environmental legacy of this delta area, an amazing water resource.
The ticket price is reasonable: $19.99 for adults, $14.99 for kids 6 to 15, and free for kids under five. We took a cooler of iced drinks and snacks, and were comfortable the whole trip. The view of the Mobile harbor alone is worth the ride, but add to that the fun and informative guides and it was a great day trip away from the beach.
And the Five Rivers Delta Resource Center is also a nice facility with air-conditioned, clean bathrooms and a wonderfully informative exhibit area. It made a nice place for a stopover while waiting for the boat ride.
Do yourself a favor and next time you are driving along I-10 on the way to the beach, take the time to discover the beautiful natural resource of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta.
