Discovery Saturday at NAS: Vietnam
I just learned that this Saturday, October 11, brings a presentation you don’t want to miss if you have any interest in history – particularly the United States’ involvement in Vietnam and those who were sent to that beautiful but war-torn country.
Author Tim O’Brien will be on hand at the National Naval Aviation Museum to give away (one book per family) and sign copies of his acclaimed book The Things They Carried. Although a work of fiction, this well-written book of short stories lets you see the war through the eyes of those who were there.
Written in 2005, the book was soon named by the New York Times as one of the best books of the last quarter century, and it also received a number of other literary awards.
The event, made possible by the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation’s Discovery Saturday series and in conjunction with the West Florida Public Library’s The BIG READ program, begins at 10 a.m. and is free – as is admission to the museum. Plan to spend the day there, enjoying lunch onsite, viewing IMAX movies and exploring the tremendous displays.
Make Saturday a Pensacola day. It will be well worth the less-than-one-hour drive from Gulf Shores/Orange Beach.
