I have one more weekend vacation to spend on the beach—Labor Day weekend. And I have two book options for vacation reading. One is a book I bought last year and just completely forgot I had. The other is an electronic book I bought just before discovering the first. Both look like excellent reads.
So I’m trying to think of my favorite places to read when I’m vacationing in Gulf Shores &
Orange Beach. The actual beach is probably by far my favorite reading spot. There’s no better setting for getting lost in a book than relaxing in a good beach chair, surrounded by white sand and the sound of the waves and seagulls and other beach-goers, with the Gulf spread out in front of you. And I’ve discovered that I really enjoy reading e-books on the beach—no pages for the wind to blow around.
I like reading on the balcony of a Gulf-front Orange Beach condo for many of the same reasons. Plus, with balcony reading I have the added advantage of being able to read outside first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee (or late at night with an adult beverage) in complete privacy.
Now here’s where a paper book might be the better option: when water is involved. I love my lazy river time, and when I stay somewhere like Phoenix West or Phoenix on the Bay, I’ve been known to float along with a book in hand. It’s an excellent way to read—but maybe not as safe for en electronic book!
So I think I will bring both and just decide when I’m there. The important thing is to get down there and start relaxing—everything else will work itself out.
